Secure your Glasgow accommodation before you arrive

Starting at a Glasgow university is one thing. Finding somewhere decent to live from the other side of the world is another.

Glasgow's private rental market is competitive and fast-moving. Properties go quickly, landlords expect prompt responses, and viewing in person, from Beijing, Mumbai or New York, simply isn't an option. That's where we come in.

Sort & Settle Glasgow acts as your local representative. We search, view and secure rental properties on your behalf, so that when you arrive in the UK, you have a home waiting for you.

Why you may need us

Every Glasgow university offers some form of accommodation - but the reality is that university halls do not come close to covering demand. Most institutions guarantee places only to a narrow group of students meeting strict deadlines, and even then the offer is one room in halls, not a home that suits your life.

If any of the following apply to you, you are likely looking at the private market:

  • You are a returning or second-year student - university accommodation guarantees almost universally apply to first year only

  • You are a postgraduate research student - most institutions offer no guarantee to this group

  • You are arriving with a partner or family - university halls are single-occupancy only, across every Glasgow institution

  • You applied late or haven't yet met the conditions of your offer

  • You want something more suitable than halls - more space, a specific area, or a longer contract

In each of these situations, you need to find your own accommodation. And you need to do it before you arrive.

What we do

We handle the process on your behalf, from first search through to signed lease.

Property search
We identify suitable properties based on your requirements - area, budget, size, transport links to your campus, and shortlist options from live availability in the market.

Viewings and representation
We attend viewings in person, provide honest written feedback, photos and video, and advise on whether a property represents good value and is right for your situation.

Securing the tenancy
We liaise directly with letting agents, move quickly when a suitable property is found, and support you through the application and referencing process.

Practical guidance
Glasgow's rental market has specific rules and processes that differ from many other countries. We explain how tenancies work in Scotland - including your rights as a tenant under Scottish law - so you understand what you are signing and what to expect.

A note on Scottish tenancy law

Scotland operates under a distinct legal framework for private rentals called the Private Residential Tenancy. Unlike tenancies in England and many other countries, there is no fixed end date - your tenancy continues until you choose to leave, with proper notice. Landlords cannot end your tenancy simply because a fixed term has expired.

This matters for students. It means you are not automatically evicted at the end of an academic year, and you have stronger security of tenure than in most other parts of the UK. Understanding this before you sign gives you confidence and protects you.

If you need visa support too

We are authorised and regulated by the Immigration Advice Authority (IAA) to provide immigration advice and assistance in the UK.

If you are coming to Glasgow to study and need support with your Student visa — whether that is an initial application, a visa extension, or understanding your conditions of stay — we can help through our associated service, GB Visa & Immigration Services.

This is entirely separate from the accommodation service, and there is no obligation to use both. But for international students managing both an accommodation search and a visa application simultaneously, having regulated support available in one place can be useful.

Further information is available at www.gbvisas.co.uk.

Who we work with

We support international students coming to all of Glasgow's universities and institutions, including the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Whether you are arriving for a one-year Masters, a multi-year undergraduate degree, or a research programme, the process is the same — you need somewhere to live, you cannot be here to find it, and the clock is running.

How to get started

The earlier you make contact, the better your options. Glasgow's rental market peaks hard in July and August ahead of the September intake, and the best properties go well before the academic year begins.

We offer an initial consultation - a focused session to understand your requirements, explain the market and outline a realistic plan. It is practical, honest advice about what is achievable for your situation and budget, and the fee is redeemable against the full service if you choose to proceed.
